Probably everyone who reads DesktopLinux.com — and certainly yours truly — encounters the same question over and over again: “What’s the best Linux desktop distribution?” Now, while some people will swear up and down that Slackware or Fedora or even Puppy, for that matter, is the best Linux desktop, I think the answer is more complicated. In fact, I don’t think there is a single answer.

Adobe AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime) is a runtime for building Internet-connected desktop applications with offine storage. It’s been available for Mac and Windows for a while, and now an alpha (non-feature complete) Linux version has been released. I tested it out in Ubuntu 8.04.

Adobe is joining the LF to collaborate on the advancement of Linux as a leading platform for rich Internet applications (RIA) and Web 2.0 technologies.“Adobe’s decision to join the LF is a natural extension of its commitment to open standards and open source, which demonstrates its leadership and foresight in the software industry,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation. “Adobe’s membership will contribute to our goal of increasing even more application development on Linux with a specific emphasis on Web 2.0 applications.”

vino is VNC server for GNOME. VNC is a protocol that allows remote display of a user’s desktop. This package provides a VNC server that integrates with GNOME, allowing you to export your running desktop to another computer for remote use or diagnosis.

apt-file is a command line tool for searching packages in Debian/Ubuntu repositories.
Unlike apt-cache search, apt-file can find files in uninstalled or can list the content of uninstalled packages.
